Животная книга посвящена умиранию – вернее, промежуточному моменту перехода, состоянию нежити, в котором стирается граница между живым и мёртвым, а также между человеком и «не-человеком». Другой ведущей темой оказывается зыбкий поиск условного «рая». Книга опирается на широкий мифологический материал, духовные песни сектантов и модернистскую литературу, однако остаётся при этом атеистической – здесь только открытый луч смерти и даль умирания, не сулящая никакого берега. Название книги заимствовано у раскольников-духоборцев, однако лишено своего переносного значения: «книга жизни» становится здесь книгой (голой) жизни – превращается в книгу, составленную животным, или даже в книгу-животное.

Sect of Phoenix – The Animal Book

The Animal Book is dedicated to dying - or rather, the moment of transition, the state of undead, in which the line between living and dead is blurred, as well as that between human and "non-human". The other leading theme proves to be a shaky search of what could be relatively called "heaven". The book rests upon a wide mythological base, spiritual songs of sectarians, and modernist literature; however, it remains atheistic - there's only the open ray of death and the expanse of dying not promising any shore beyond. The title is borrowed from Doukhobor sectarians, but is devoid of its figurative sense: "the book of life" becomes here a book of (bare) life - turns into a book written by an animal (literally "living creature" in Russian), or even the book itself being an animal.
